Join Detroit Bird Alliance for a one-day conference at the Michigan State University Community Music School in Midtown Detroit.

Harmony of Bird Song by Andy Jarema

In this session, local music teacher/composer Andy Jarema will share his research into the relationship between bird song and music. Attendees will learn about the fascinating science behind bird song and trace the history of music composers utilizing bird song in their works. Attendees will also participate in listening exercises to identify birds by ear and analyze bird song through a musician’s lens.

The Magic of Bird Sounds by R. Kovalcik

In this presentation, Rosann Kovalcik will cover the differences between bird calls and bird songs and why birds use these different vocalizations. How are these sounds created? Why do birds sing? How can I learn which bird I am hearing? Join us for this journey into an aspect of birds that will add depth to our enjoyment of these beautiful creatures.

Birding by Ear by Donna Posont

The Birding by Ear and Beyond program has helped participants venture on many field trips throughout the state of Michigan and while also participating in the Great Backyard Bird Count by listing the birds observed by ear. Through these experiences, attendees gain confidence in one’s abilities to use all available senses to interpret the natural world. The activities have increased awareness of the environment and promoted a sense of wonder with the beauty of nature.

Nature Inspired Poetry facilitated by Suzanne H.

Founded in 1995, InsideOut Literary Arts is the oldest and the largest literary arts organization in Detroit. Its mission is to inspire and equip students to think critically, create bravely, and share their voices with the wider world. In its nearly 30 years, InsideOut has cultivated the literary and academic skills of over 75,000 students through transformative writing experiences.

Acoustics and Bird Study by Chris Dennison

In collaboration with the Study of Active Neighborhoods Detroit (StAND) Project, Chris is currently studying patterns of bird species diversity and occupancy in Detroit neighborhoods using bioacoustic recorders. The results of this work will help create positive conservation outcomes in the city, and inform additional research into the relationships between biodiversity, natural soundscapes, and human health.
